Celebrating 36 years of music in Hawai'i

J. Scott Janusch is retiring this season as Principal Oboe of the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra. Scott was featured as a soloist with the Honolulu Symphony on six occasions performing the Mozart Oboe Concerto in 1990 and 2002, the Vivaldi d minor Concerto in 1999, the Bach Double Violin/Oboe Concerto and Mozart’s ‘Sinfonia Concertante’ in 2007, and the Strauss Oboe Concerto with Andreas Delfs conducting in 2008.

Also a keyboard artist, Scott has performed on the piano, harpsichord, and celesta for the Honolulu Symphony, Ballet Hawaii, Chamber Music Hawaii, and for several faculty recitals at the University of Hawaii.

In 2017, Scott Janusch began his work on the Hawaiian Oboe Legacy Project. As his gift to the Hawai'i community that has nurtured his professional musical career, Scott directed the creation of a new oboe made of native Hawaiian kauila wood, and also commissioned a new musical composition featuring the kauila oboe. The oboe’s debut was met with thunderous applause on November 9, 2019 with the world premiere of Na Kau ‘Elua, The Two Seasons by Jon Magnussen.

Our entire HSO 'Ohana is going to miss hearing Scott break the silence of our concert halls to tune the orchestra. Please join us in wishing Scott a relaxing, well-earned retirement!

standing on the shoulders of giants

“As we look to the future of our Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra, we are filled with gratitude for Scott’s incredible contributions to this organization. Donations in honor of Scott’s retirement will go toward the construction of The J. Scott Janusch Conductor’s Podium by local designers and artisans. Scott has left an indelible mark on the heart of our symphony, so I hope you will join me in supporting this special project in Scott’s name.” -Paul Kosasa, Board Chair

Scott Janusch has long been at the heart of the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra: a great leader, a tremendous inspiration, and a shining poet of the oboe.  His playing has helped create the sound of our orchestra, established an impressive level of excellence, and lifted all of us to greater musical heights.  Scott's peerless musicianship will always be a part of the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra, and we are forever grateful for the extraordinary gift of having him as our principal oboist. - JoAnn Faletta, Artistic Advisor
