Affordable Student and Youth Orchestra Tickets in Hawaiʻi
Taking a young person to the symphony can be an exciting way to experience live music together, but ticket cost and age suitability are often part of the decision.
At the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, we offer several ways for students and families to make live orchestral music more accessible. Depending on the concert, those options can include $15 student tickets, group savings, family-oriented events, and free community performances.
Because programs and schedules can change during the season, it helps to understand which options are ongoing policies and which depend on the individual event.
$15 Student Tickets for HSO Concerts
Our current student ticket program offers tickets for $15, including fees.
Student tickets are available:
On the day of the concert only
In person at the venue box office
With a valid student ID
One ticket per student
The program currently applies from elementary school through higher education.
For students who are flexible about when they purchase, this can be one of the simplest ways to experience a Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra performance at a lower ticket price.
Availability can depend on the performance, so we recommend reviewing our ticketing FAQ before heading to the venue.
Group Savings for Families, Schools, and Youth Organizations
If you are planning an outing for a larger group, our current group ticket policy offers 25% off for groups of 20 or more.
Group sales can be useful for school groups, youth organizations, families attending together, and other community groups.
For current availability and seating options, contact our Box Office & Patron Services team before the performance. Advance planning is especially helpful when everyone in the group needs to sit together.
You can find the current group-sales policy and contact information in our ticketing FAQ.
Which HSO Concerts Are Appropriate for Children?
Age guidance varies by concert type.
Children five years and older are welcome at standard performances with a purchased ticket. For our Masterworks and Spotlight concerts, we currently recommend ages 8 and older.
Family-oriented programming is different. Events such as Beyond the Music, community programs, and some outdoor concerts may be designed for a wider range of ages.
That distinction matters when you are choosing a first orchestra experience. A younger child may feel more comfortable at a program created with families in mind, while an older student may be ready for a full Masterworks concert.
Before buying tickets, check our current concert listings and the individual event page for the most current age guidance.
Films in Concert Can Be a Familiar Introduction to the Orchestra
Our Films in Concert performances pair a movie on the big screen with its score performed live by the orchestra.
For young listeners who already know the film, that familiar story can provide a useful entry point into live orchestral music. Instead of encountering the orchestra only through a traditional concert program, they can hear how familiar music changes when it is performed live in the room.
Films in Concert are part of our public programming, although individual titles and performance dates change by season.
Explore our current concert calendar to see which Films in Concert performances are currently scheduled.
Free Community Concerts Can Offer Another Way to Begin
We also present free community and educational performances at selected times.
These events can give families an opportunity to experience live orchestral music without purchasing a standard concert ticket. Some community programs have taken place outdoors or have been presented as free public performances.
The location, reservation requirements, and age guidance vary by event, so we do not recommend assuming that every community concert works the same way.
Check our upcoming concerts and events for current free or family-oriented opportunities.
Opportunities for Young Musicians Go Beyond Attending a Concert
For students who already play an instrument, HSO's work with young musicians can extend beyond sitting in the audience.
HSO has participated in side-by-side projects with Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony, giving young musicians opportunities to share the stage with professional orchestra musicians. We have also presented the Nā Hōkū ʻŌpio / Young Stars competition.
These programs are different from standard youth ticket discounts. Participation requirements, application dates, and current availability depend on the specific program.
Young musicians and their families should review current education and event information rather than relying on details from a previous season.
How to Choose a First HSO Experience
If this will be your child's first symphony concert, start with the experience rather than simply looking for the lowest ticket price.
Consider:
Your child's age and comfort with a full concert
Whether a familiar film or family-oriented program would be a better introduction
Whether your student qualifies for the $15 day-of-concert ticket
Whether your group is large enough to qualify for current group savings
You do not need to know classical music before attending. The goal is to choose a concert that feels like a good fit for the person you are bringing.
If you are still deciding which type of performance might work best, explore our concert series to compare Masterworks, Spotlight, Films in Concert, and other HSO programming.
