Symphony in the Schools
Symphony in the School brings the symphony directly to students, serving to introduce symphonic music in themed programs that explore musical appreciation and storytelling through narration, student participation, and performance. The program launched with a school-wide performance at Kawanankoa Middle School on December 11 with tunes from The Polar Express, The Nutcracker, Mendelssohn's “A Midsummer Night's Dream, ”an original work by HSO Composer in Residence Michael-Thomas Foumai, Copland's “Variation on a Shaker Melody”, and by popular request from the students –“Golden” from the Netflix film K-Pop Demon Hunters.

Symphony Day
The Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra offers morning matinee concerts for local students in grades 4-12th in the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall designed for student audiences and accompanied by curated curriculums for pre and post concert activities. In the 25/26 Season, HSO coordinated the attendance of about 2,500 students per morning matinee performance, bussing schools across the Oʻahu to the concert hall to enjoy live symphonic performances and educational storytelling.
Testimonials:
“the storytelling, the incredible music! really it was so special as NONE of our keiki have ever been to a Symphony before!!! The music and visuals and moolelo through the narrator was amazing!”
“The performance was a true sensory delight. Melodic harmonies elevated the narration, weaving together with vivid visuals to create a profound, immersive portrait of the Hōkūleʻa story. It was a joy to see my students at the edge of their seats enjoying the experience. Mahalo for this opportunity!!!”
