Before You Book a Movie Concert in Honolulu: 7 Things to Check

Watching a favorite movie with live orchestral music sounds like a great night out. But before purchasing tickets, you'll want to know exactly what kind of performance you're attending, whether the film suits your group, and how to prepare for the venue.

At the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra (HSO), our Films in Concert programming brings movies and live orchestral performance together. While audiences follow the story on screen, our musicians perform the score as part of the presentation.

If you're considering attending a film concert in Honolulu, we've put together seven things worth checking before you book.

1. Confirm Whether You're Seeing the Entire Film

Not every concert advertised as a movie-music experience follows the same format.

Some orchestral performances feature selections from multiple film scores without screening the movies themselves. Others present a feature film while musicians perform its score live.

Both can be enjoyable, but they offer different experiences.

Performance format What you'll experience
Film in Concert A movie is screened while an orchestra performs its score live
Film music concert An orchestra performs music from one or more movies, usually without screening complete films
Themed orchestral concert A performance inspired by a film, composer, franchise, or musical theme

Our Films in Concert programming centers on live orchestral accompaniment to film presentations.

When selecting a performance, read the individual event description to confirm the featured movie and presentation format. Avoid assuming that every concert featuring film music includes a screening.

If you'd like to understand the performance format in greater detail, read our guide, What Is a Film-in-Concert Experience?.

2. Check the Movie Rating and Audience Guidance

A film concert can be a wonderful introduction to orchestral music for someone who already enjoys movies.

However, familiar characters and an orchestral setting don't automatically make every event suitable for young children.

Start by checking the movie's content rating. Consider whether your child is comfortable sitting through a feature-length presentation, including scenes that may be intense or suspenseful.

You should also review the event's age guidance.

Our concert attendance policies may differ according to the program. Family-oriented performances can have different recommendations from our regular concert series.

If you're planning to attend with children, check our official ticketing and concert FAQ before buying tickets.

Is a Film Concert a Good First Orchestra Experience for Kids?

It can be, especially if the child enjoys the featured film and is comfortable with its content.

Following a familiar story while hearing live musicians can help younger listeners recognize how instruments contribute to a movie's emotional moments.

You might encourage your child to notice when the music becomes louder, which instruments they can see, or how the music changes between scenes.

There's no need to turn the concert into a lesson. Enjoying the film and listening to the orchestra can be enough.

3. Check the Total Performance Length

A movie's advertised runtime may not tell you exactly how long you'll spend at a film concert.

Depending on the production, the event may include an intermission or other programmed elements.

That can affect your transportation plans, dinner reservations, or arrangements for children.

Before committing to an evening, check the event description for its expected duration and intermission information.

If those details aren't available, our Box Office & Patron Services team can help you find the most appropriate event information.

Planning Dinner Before or After?

Use the concert's published start time as your starting point, but avoid assuming that a performance will finish at a particular hour.

If you're making restaurant reservations or arranging transportation, allow flexibility until the expected duration is confirmed.

For more ideas about organizing an evening around a performance, explore our Honolulu pre- and post-concert itinerary guide.

4. Choose Seats With Both the Screen and Orchestra in Mind

At a conventional movie theater, most people choose seats based on their view of the screen.

A film concert adds another element: the musicians performing the score.

You may want to watch the movie while occasionally looking toward the orchestra to see how different instrumental sections contribute to the soundtrack.

Before purchasing tickets, consider what matters most to you.

If your priority is following the film: Look for seating that provides a comfortable, unobstructed view of the screen.

If you enjoy watching musicians perform: Consider the relationship between your seat, the stage, and the screen.

If you're attending with children: Think about their sightlines and whether they can comfortably see the presentation.

The best choice depends on the venue's seating layout and your preferences. We wouldn't recommend assuming that one section is always best for every film concert.

Review the available seating map during checkout and contact our Box Office if you have questions about a particular location.

5. Confirm the Venue Before Planning Transportation

The Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall is an established Honolulu venue for our orchestral performances.

However, not every HSO event necessarily takes place there.

Before arranging transportation, confirm the venue printed on your ticket or event listing.

For concerts at Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall, check the current parking and arrival information. If you're staying in Waikīkī or another part of Honolulu, allow time for travel rather than assuming the venue is within walking distance.

For performances elsewhere, follow the instructions associated with that specific event.

Our concert FAQ provides information about attendance and official ticketing arrangements.

What If You're Visiting Oʻahu?

If you're planning a vacation around a particular film concert, check the performance date and location before finalizing your itinerary.

Our event listings are the most useful source for determining which performances are scheduled during your stay.

Film titles and venues can change between seasons, so an event advertised in a previous year should not be treated as an upcoming performance.

6. Review Ticket Policies Before Checkout

Choosing an event is only part of the decision. You should also know which ticketing channel you're using and what happens if your plans change.

Our official ticketing channels include the HSO Box Office and authorized Blaisdell/Ticketmaster options, depending on the event.

You can begin with our official HSO ticketing portal to browse available performances and purchase tickets.

Our published FAQ states that ticket purchases are final and nonrefundable. It also explains that artists and programs are subject to change.

Before checkout, verify your event date, seating selection, ticket quantity, and total price.

If you're purchasing tickets for friends or family, make sure everyone can attend the selected performance before completing the order.

What If You Can't Attend?

If your plans change after purchasing, review our ticketing FAQ for the current options.

Don't assume that unused tickets can be refunded or exchanged for another performance.

If you need assistance with an existing purchase, contact our Box Office & Patron Services team using the details on our official website.

7. Know What to Expect as an Audience Member

You don't need to be a regular symphony attendee to enjoy a movie with live orchestra.

A film concert is an opportunity to watch a story unfold while hearing musicians bring its score into the room.

Still, it's worth checking a few audience guidelines before arriving.

Can You Talk or Take Photos During the Film?

Because the movie is being presented as part of a live performance, the experience requires consideration for both the musicians and other audience members.

Keep conversations to a minimum during the presentation and follow the venue's policies about photography and recording.

If you aren't sure whether taking pictures is permitted, check the event instructions or ask venue staff before the performance.

Is There a Dress Code?

You don't need formal evening clothing to attend a typical HSO concert.

Choose something comfortable and appropriate for the venue. If you're attending a themed event and are thinking about wearing a costume, check whether any special costume or venue restrictions apply.

What If You Arrive Late?

Late-seating procedures may vary by event and venue.

Arriving with enough time to find your seat can help you avoid interrupting the performance. If you arrive after the event begins, follow the ushers' instructions.

Our priority is helping audiences enjoy the music while respecting the performers and fellow guests.

A Quick Checklist Before Buying Film Concert Tickets

Before purchasing tickets, use this checklist to review the details that matter most.

  • The event includes the movie presentation or musical format I want.

  • The film's content and the event's age guidance suit my group.

  • I know the expected duration, or I've checked whether that information is available.

  • I've considered the seating map and my preferred view.

  • I've confirmed the venue and transportation arrangements.

  • I've reviewed the ticket price and purchase policies.

  • I understand the relevant arrival and audience guidelines.

You don't need to make the experience complicated. These checks simply help ensure that the performance you choose matches your expectations.
