Intro
Join Music & Artistic Director Dane Lam and Conductor in Residence Michael-Thomas Foumai as they bring Respighi’s Pines of Rome to life.
Follow our narrator with original storytelling as the orchestra explores the ancient city through the centuries-old trees of Rome, witnessing playful children, serene nights, and a triumphant sunrise march. Learn more about the composer Ottorino Respighi, the meaning behind the four movements, and how each orchestra section weaves a colorful musical tapestry.
This family-friendly program is just one hour long, with very affordable family pricing - perfect for introducing our keiki and kupuna to the joy of live symphonic music.
Before Beyond the Music: Pines of Rome begins, families are invited to arrive early for a special treat - the Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony's Instrument Petting Zoo!
At 10:00 AM, the lobby doors open for this interactive experience that gives keiki (and young at heart!) a chance to hold, touch, and even try out real symphonic instruments with guidance from HYS musicians. From smooth strings of the violin to the bold brass of the trumpet, kids can explore the sounds of the orchestra up close and discover what makes each instrument unique.
